How we made it count in 2017

Earlier this year we were awarded Excellence in CSR for our commitment to charity, community and the environment and looking back over 2017, it’s easy to see why.

Alongside our two nominated charities of the year – The Christie and Manchester Mind - we supported over 40 local and national organisations, raising funds with a host of events including the Manchester half marathon, a family fun day, the Pretty Muddy challenge, two golf days and 48 colleague dress-down days.

In March, we were an official call centre for Comic Relief, with 100 volunteers manning phone lines to collect donations on Red Nose Day and Premiership rugby team Sale Sharks joining in with the fundraising.

We also donated to The Factory Youth Zone in 2017, as we have for the past five years, giving £25,000 to the Harpurhey centre which provides creative activities for youngsters with additional needs, as well as supporting their fundraising activity at the annual Manchester Ball.

Throughout the year, the Together Foodbank went from strength to strength and collected enough donations for a total of 1800 meals. Nigel Tedford, project manager at Stockport Foodbank which distributes the food packages said: “This is brilliant. Everyone at Together deserves a hearty round of congratulations for this fantastic achievement. Thank you so much as this makes a massive difference to families in need.”

As well as supporting families, we invited 150 pensioners for Christmas dinner and all the trimmings at our head office, with our award-winning choir welcoming the guests for a festive feast and an afternoon of entertainment.

Alongside all this, our commitment to being green saw a phenomenal 98 per cent of waste recycled each month, equal to 67,000 kg carbon saved each year or the equivalent of 50 trees!

And proving we're not afraid to get our hands dirty, a team of eight colleagues took to the hills for a day of rewarding work to improve the National Trust’s Bosley Cloud site, braving downpours to build paths and cut back woodland and make it more accessible for visitors.

Kevin Fisher, our HR director said: “It’s been a fantastic year for us as a business with excellent trading results and sustained growth as we move forward with our ambitious plans.

“However, we’re equally proud of our community work, thanks to the continued support of our colleagues. Looking back on the year, it’s incredible to see what we can achieve when everyone plays their part.”
