Spotlight on... Colin, Wendy and Jane

This trio tackled a spartan Porthmadog terrace with holiday let potential.

Powys couple Colin and Wendy were paired up with stranger Jane, who lives in Shrewsbury, to renovate a terraced property in pretty Porthmadog on the Welsh coast for the new Channel 4 series, The Great House Giveaway. Missed the show? Watch it now on ALL4.

Meet the contestants

Colin and Wendy met 17 years ago and live in a rented property that they’ve done lots of work on (much to their landlord’s gratitude). Colin works in the building trade and Jane helps out with the admin side of this. Meticulous and particular, they dream of owning their own home and say their motto is “failure is not an option” – but know that approaching retirement would make borrowing a challenge.

Jane, 63, is a former hotelier who has renovated several properties before, but says she found herself ‘back at square one’ after selling her home and using the proceeds to help out her son, who was in financial dire straits. These days she lives in a rented Shrewsbury flat with her two dogs. She’d love to buy again, but believes her age is against her when it comes to getting a mortgage.

What did they do?

The interior of the mid-terraced property they bought through an online auction explained why it was priced well below the local average: it was spartan and dated, with an old-fashioned kitchen and decades-old carpets. A bowing ceiling in the third bedroom – but no evidence of damp – was a curious problem that would require further investigation.

The trio knocked through from the kitchen into the wetroom at the back of the house to create a much larger family space, sensibly retaining the separate downstairs WC. The rear bedroom was divided to create an upstairs bathroom, with a sun tunnel introducing plenty of natural light. The simple and tasteful décor gives the house a bright, modern look.

Result: £19,200 profit

Our expert's view

Scott Hendry, Director of Auction Relationships:

“What a fantastic renovation. The team’s knowledge of renovation, and particularly Colin’s experience in the building trade, has proven invaluable – and helped them to achieve a healthy profit.

“Had the property not secured a buyer when advertised on the open market, the team could have targeted investors; Porthmadog is a popular tourist destination during the summer months, and canny buy-to-let landlords are looking at holiday lets as another income stream – especially given the recent boom in British families holidaying in the UK. This is just the kind of property that would work as a holiday let: situated by the sea, with a clean finish and a great balance of living and sleeping space.”
