Their Glossop bungalow renovation is a cautionary tale. Where did it all go wrong?

Meet the contestants

David, 29, is a self-employed builder and kitchen-fitter. He applied for the show having struggled to save for years, with creating a home for his young family his main motivation for wanting to take part. He says he’s used to working on renovations and has high standards.

Adam, 35, works in hospitality and currently lodges with his landlady. He helps around the house with DIY and has renovated a property with his ex-girlfriend. He says he applied to take part wanting to raise the deposit for a property that would underpin future domestic bliss, with a girlfriend and children.

The old-fashioned interior of this 1970s property looked like it hadn’t been given a significant update in decades, with threadbare carpets and a dated kitchen that needed replacement. There was lots to like though, with a large detached garage, plus extensive gardens front and rear thanks to its generous corner plot.

David and Adam’s simple refurbishment leaves the layout unchanged, with fresh plaster, a new kitchen and bathroom, and new carpets and paint. It’s a blank canvas, but the house is on the same street as the local primary school and could make a happy family home – especially with that all that outside space and off-street parking.

Result: £40,700 loss

Our expert's view

Scott Hendry, Director of Auction Relationships:

“David and Adam’s is a cautionary tale that demonstrates the risks involved with trying to flip property, with their six months of hard work resulting in a sale for little more than their initial purchase price. It’s hard not to feel sympathy, with vandals stealing them of both time and money through their thoughtless actions. But even without that setback, this project could still have made a loss.

“It just goes to show the importance of setting your sights on the right property; areas and properties popular with retirees, like village bungalows, have slower markets – people simply don’t move so often later in life.

“So if you’ve invested in such a property and have to sell in a hurry for any reason, as David and Adam were, you could be forced into accepting an offer well below its market value. Whoever bought this from them got a steal.”
