Spotlight on... Osian and Elen

Would £12,000 be enough to resolve their Flintshire bungalow’s layout issues?

Strangers Osian and Elen were teamed up to renovate a tired bungalow in Mold, North Wales, for the new Channel 4 series, The Great House Giveaway. Missed the show? Watch it now on ALL4.

Meet the contestants

Osian, 26, works as a salesman and engineer for a forestry machinery company, and trains sheepdogs in his spare time. He currently lives at home with his mum, but he’s keen to move out and buy his own place. He’d saved a deposit by the time he graduated university, but used the money to go travelling instead – thinking that home ownership would prevent him from seeing the world.

Elen, 23, works as an assistant estimator in the construction industry and is undertaking a qualified Chartered Surveying course in her spare time – so she has lots of experience working with subcontractors. She lives with her parents and says she’s jealous of her sisters, who have both flown the nest, and would love her independence.

Find out what Osian and Elen had to say about their experience of being on The Great House Giveaway.

What did they do?

The bungalow needed significant modernisation, with a cramped kitchen – but did benefit from a fully converted loft with a dormer window and central heating. The problem? It was accessible only using a loft ladder, so it couldn’t be advertised as a bedroom. There was also a damp problem and a dated bathroom suite.

Osian and Elen have reconfigured the downstairs to create a dual-aspect kitchen-diner, and install a staircase that meets building regulations. Fresh finishes everywhere have made the place feel clean and subtly luxurious, and a coat of paint on the exterior brickwork has given a welcome dose of kerb appeal.

Result: £14,000 profit

Our expert's view

Scott Hendry, Director of Auction Relationships:

“Converting a loft is seriously expensive, and doing this alone could have swallowed their entire renovation budget – so Osian and Elen were lucky the previous owners had already done most of the work to convert it.

"Adding a staircase seems like a daunting job but it’s actually less expensive than you might expect, and using an L-shaped flight means they’ve not sacrificed too much space.

“Adding a third bedroom really expands your potential market of buyers, and achieving this without sacrificing much space ensures the house doesn’t feel imbalanced. With its modern kitchen-diner and huge, level garden, the bungalow is now a fantastic family home. Well done both!”
